Working at Carmen

Many staff join Carmen to be a part of our success.  We are proud of our graduation and college acceptance rates and of the character traits our graduates exemplify.  We accomplish this by not only believing in our students but also our teachers.  The key to our success is teachers who truly believe in each student’s ability to improve and their own ability to improve in their teaching practice. ​

Day for a High School Teacher

  • 7:45 Arrive at school and prepare for class and advisory.
  • 8:00-8:30 Advisory: Lead your 15 advisees through a circle sharing activity. Check in with 1 advisee who is struggling with behavior. Double check 1 advisee who has had constant uniform violations.
  • 8:30-9:30 Period 1: Engage students in a lesson in your content area.
  • 9:30-10:30 Period 2: Engage students in a lesson in your content area.
  • 10:30-11:30 Prep Period 3: Meet with your course team to discuss data on yesterday’s exit slip and planning for reteaching.
  • 11:30-12:30 Intervention Group or Club: Work with students struggling in Math or Reading, lead an ACT course, or help students organize a club.
  • 12:30-1:00 Lunch Duty
  • 1:00-2:00 Period 4: Engage students in a lesson in your content area.
  • 2:00-3:00 Period 5: Detention Room Duty - monitor detention and complete grading for morning classes.
  • 3:00-4:00 Period 6: Engage students in a lesson in your content area.
  • 4:00-4:45 After School Program: Instruct students who are currently failing your course. (2 days a week)

Day for a Middle School Teacher

  • 7:45 Arrive at school and prepare for class and advisory.
  • 8:00-8:30 Advisory: Check in with 1 advisee who is struggling with behavior. Double check 1 advisee who has had constant uniform violations.
  • 8:30-10:00 Block 1: Engage students in a lesson in your content area or co-teach with your partner.
  • 10:00 -11:30 Block 2: Engage students in a lesson in your content area or co-teach with your partner.
  • 11:30-12:00 Lunch Duty
  • 12:00-12:30 Recess Duty
  • 12:30-1:15 Prep: Meet with your co-teacher to plan lessons for next week. Intervention or Club: Work with students struggling in Math or Reading, lead an ACT course, or help students organize a club.
  • 1:15-2:45 Block 3: Engage students in a lesson in your content area or co-teach with your partner.
  • 2:45-3:45 WIN (What I Need) time with students who are struggling in your class, DEAR (Drop Everything and Read), or PODS leveled group reading time.
  • 3:45-4:00 Advisory: Lead your 15 advisees through a circle sharing activity. Review homework for tonight. Check in personally with your advisee who often forgets homework.
Both of these sample schedules are examples of what a teacher schedule could look like. Schedules vary depending on the school’s needs and the teachers talents and skills in certain areas.
