Happy fall everyone, I hope all of you are doing well. This will be just a quick update, but I will have some important reminders to share. As always, do not hesitate to contact me if you need something.
It is October which means the 2019-2020 FAFSA application is now live. I will have a number of dates and times where alum can schedule meetings to file there FAFSAs with me or if you just need your login information please email me and I'll make sure I get that shared with you.
UPDATE: Siblings, schedule your meetings together. FAFSA created a way for you to sync parent data between sibling accounts!
FALL CAMPUS VISITS:
Each Fall semester I travel out to the many campuses our alumni attend. Unfortunately I cannot travel to every campus our alumni attend, but I do try to get to as many as possible. Check out where I'll be going this year! Set up a time to meet with me when I am on campus. Click on a college for the date I will be there. Sign up for a meeting here.
If you are bilingual in a particular language and would like to volunteer some of your time, Carmen is always looking for interpreters. If you are interested and would like to be added to a interpreter list, please complete this quick survey.
I hope you have been enjoying the warm weather this summer. Can you believe it is already September! We have a lot to cover in this month’s update so make sure you read through everything.
Welcome Class of 2018!
Alumni End of the Year Update 2018
Alum, happy February. Spring will be here before you know it and there is a lot to still get done before the end of the school year. If you are not in school, make sure you check out the alumni update for some great job/career opportunities with the classes you need for them included and possibly paid for in full! If you are interested in any of the following programs, please make sure you reach out to Vanessa Vasquez (firstname.lastname@example.org) who will be the contact person for the programs.
Grades, out of 200+ enrolled alum I have 10 responses on my end of the semester and only 6 students who have actually submitted or emailed me their unofficial transcript. Please complete this survey, because without it, I cannot do my job to the best of my ability.
Make sure you review some of the past Alumni updates for important notices you may have missed like the topics below:
Set up a time to meet with Mr. Carter here.
Alum, if you received a letter in the mail from UWM stating it contained "Important Tax Information," and you are NOT a student at UWM then this was sent to you by mistake. I spoke to the Bursar's Office at UWM and they informed me that there was a software glitch that sent out 1098T forms to ALL accepted students in the classes of 2017 and 2018.
You DO NOT need to do anything further. If you are enrolled at another school and have already received your 1098T form that institution then you are fine. If you need help with what to do with this form please refer to my earlier updates.
IF SOMETHING IS WRONG, please contact me ASAP so we can try to figure out what is wrong and work to fix it.
I hope all of your enjoyed your winter breaks and have caught up on rest and time with friends and family. Winter Intersession at Carmen is in full swing which means the Spring semester is almost here for our seniors soon to be graduates like you. Here is what you need to be getting done in the month of January:
What is a 1098-T Form?
The 1098-E and 1098-T are two forms from the IRS dealing with educational expenses. The E is connected to student loan interest and the T is connected to your tuition. I am attaching the general instructions for the E/T forms for tax filing.
NOTE: If you file your own taxes you'll include these forms with your taxes. If you do not file and are still claimed by your parents, make sure you give this form to them for their taxes.
I need help with FAFSA or Verification
If you just graduated, congratulations! If you are a recent graduate from a 2 or 4 year program, please help me update our records by completing a Transcript Dropbox (College Grads)
All FAFSA Applications should be filed by (12/31/17)
If you still need to file your FAFSA, you are not late yet, but we are getting close to the end of the season. NOTE: You may be able to file after January 2018, but you are not promised the full amount of financial aid any more because state grants will begin to run out.
Here is what you need to file:
Have you already been verified?
First off, don't panic. Verification is a very common process to simply make sure your FAFSA was completed correctly. Here is what you'll need to do to complete all of the paperwork:
If you're ever concerned or confused please do not hesitate to set up a time to meet with me: https://goo.gl/jEJ46S
Fall Check-ins & Thanksgiving Break
It may feel like winter, but we are still wrapping up Fall check-ins. If you haven't already, please take a minute to quick complete my "Mid-Year Review" survey, my goal is 50% of active alumni and I would love to beat that goal before the end of the semester.
I wish all of you and your families a safe holiday season and remember that I am here to assist if you need it.
