Student LifeWho Are We?
Carmen High School of Science and Technology (Carmen HS) has two campuses: South and Northwest. Both are small, safe charter schools. We have dedicated teachers and staff who take the time to get to know you and who share the same goals as you- to prepare you for college. In 2013, Carmen HS was named the 5th-best high school in Wisconsin by U.S. News and World Report. We are known for our challenging academics. All students are required to take five years of English and four years each of college prep Mathematics, Science, History/Social Studies; three years of Spanish (or Spanish for Heritage Speakers); and at least two semesters of Fine Arts or Performing Arts. In addition, you will develop ties and experience in your community through completion of 20 volunteer service hours each year. Carmen HS also offers engineering, as well as Advanced Placement (AP) classes to earn college credit. Our three-week winter Inter-Session and Summer School terms allow you to take elective courses that interest you or give you extra help to boost your grades in core classes. In addition, we prepare you for taking college placement exams. How Do We Help You? We're here to support you every step of the way. You'll develop an Individual Learning Plan that defines objectives and strategies in three planning areas: academic, financial, and life/personal development. Each student is assigned to one teacher as an adviser. Your adviser will stick with you throughout high school to make sure you are on track for college. Class sizes are small and interactive. Teachers are always here for you- all you need to do is ask. No appointment is necessary. If you are having difficulty with your classes, Carmen HS has an After-School Program where you can get one-on-one help from teachers and tutors. What About Sports & Clubs? At Carmen HS, you can make your ideas come alive. A member of Wisconsin Interscholastic Athlete Association (WIAA), Carmen HS offers a variety of junior varsity and varsity-level sports including soccer, volleyball, basketball, track, and cross country. We have clubs in Chess, Health Careers, Accounting, Video Games, Music, Yearbook, and the Environment, many of which were started by students. If you have an idea for a new club, you can present your idea to a teacher for sponsorship. Students also create and plan dances, bake sales, pep rallies, and many other events. How Do I Pay For College? In addition to our college prep courses, some students develop their ability to apply academics in "real world" settings through the Student Internship Program. The program places you in professional environments in local businesses or nonprofit organizations where you will work one full day each week. Participants are eligible for scholarship money for college based on the number of semesters you participate in the program by graduation. Carmen HS also will help you identify other scholarship and financial aid opportunities. |
